Rotterdam awards €2m in subsidies for shore power projects

The Municipality of Rotterdam has awarded nearly €2m in investment subsidies to four companies operating in the Port of Rotterdam, intended to support the construction of shore power installations.

Municipality of Rotterdam

Simons presented the cheques to JA Balck, Matrans Rotterdam Terminal, Broekman Project Services, and VT Group. The financial support aims to expand the availability of shore power in the port, reducing emissions and noise from berthed vessels.

“I have a lot of respect for these companies,” said Robert Simons, municipal executive responsible for port affairs. “They’re showing courage, because shore power is primarily a matter of taking action. With their investment, and with the municipality’s support, we’re taking a concrete step together toward a cleaner, quieter, and future-proof port.”

The subsidies provided by the Municipality of Rotterdam cover costs including technical components, engineering, grid connections, and project management. This initiative forms part of a broader effort to increase shore power availability across the port.

In a previous phase, companies were able to apply for subsidies to conduct feasibility studies. According to the municipality, the focus has now shifted to implementation. A revised “shore-based power strategy” outlining plans for the coming years will be published shortly.
