RWG secures €25m from Invest-NL for OPS

The shore power infrastructure is set to be installed at all berths of RWG on the Tweede Maasvlakte.
Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) has secured €25m in funding from Invest-NL to install shore power infrastructure at its fully automated container terminal on the Tweede Maasvlakte. The project was announced last year, and it aims to reduce emissions from docked vessels by enabling them to use green electricity instead of using diesel generators. Once operational, the installation is expected to cut CO₂ emissions by up to 23,000 tonnes annually.
The new system will cover all RWG berths and is scheduled to support large vessels calling at the terminal from 2030 onwards. RWG believes the investment is a critical step toward maintaining competitiveness amid tightening environmental regulations.
Invest-NL, acting as the Netherlands’ implementation partner for the EU’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), is also helping RWG access additional European subsidy support. “Thanks to the financing from Invest-NL, RWG is able to install shore power earlier than planned, thereby reducing the emissions from docked ships to zero in the shortest possible time,” said RWG CEO Ronald Lugthart, adding that the project will contribute to RWG becoming the world’s first fully emission-free terminal within four years.
RWG earlier said it plans to design, finance, and construct the shore power systems itself, with the first berths to be equipped by 2026—well ahead of the EU’s 2030 mandate for vessels over 5,000 dwt. The company signed a letter of intent with the Port of Rotterdam Authority to coordinate on necessary civil works and share technical data.
RWG currently operates two deep-sea berths covering a combined quay length of 1,150m and a depth of 20m, suitable for ultra-large container vessels, and one barge/feeder quay extending 550m designed for feeder and barge operations. A third deep-sea berth is under construction and it is expected to be operational by 2026. RWG’s annual capacity stands at around 2.35m TEU, which is expected to rise by 1.8m TEU following the expansion.
