Port of Constanța moves ahead with shore power

The Port of Constanța in Romania has signed a major contract to install shore-side electricity connections at 10 berths, enabling cold ironing for all vessel types, including cargo ships, bulkers, cruise ships, tankers and ferries.

The €17m (RON86.1m) contract was signed in March 2025 with Bucharest-based SC TIAB SA. The deal covers design and installation of onshore power supply (OPS) and is funded through the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) as part of the EALING initiative (European Action for coLd ironING). Implementation is expected within 27 months.

In parallel, NC “Maritime Ports Administration” SA Constantza, the port authority for the Romanian ports of Constanta, Mangalia and Tomis Marina, has awarded a US$95m (RON 410m) contract for modernisation of the electricity distribution infrastructure in the Port of Constanta. Funded by the EU’s Transport Program 2021-2027, the Romanian state budget, and the port’s resources, the 36-month project includes upgrading 66 transformer stations, expanding medium voltage cable networks, and integrating systems into a centralised SCADA system.
