Port of Duisburg invests in shore power

The Port of Duisburg (duisport) has commissioned 59 new shore power charging points for inland vessels, bringing the total number to 69. In addition, a new digital truck parking facility with 90 spaces has been opened for road transport.

With 69 charging points now available, duisport is a national leader in shore power provision. The electricity supplied is sourced entirely from renewable energy.

“This is an important step towards a climate-neutral Port of Duisburg,” said Silke Krebs, State Secretary for Economy, Industry, Climate and Energy of North Rhine-Westphalia, at the inauguration. According to Viktor Haase, Chairman of duisport’s Supervisory Board, shore power is central to turning the Rhine into a green shipping corridor.

“Seven new transformers were installed for the new shore power facilities. The Federal Government and the State supported the project with €3.8m. On an annual basis, the quayside power plants save more than 2,800t of CO2,” added Ann Kathrin Stinder, Project Manager at duisport.

Digital truck parking

In Duisburg-Meiderich, a new smart truck parking facility has entered service. Covering 21,300sqm, it offers capacity for 90 trucks and includes a social area with showers and toilets accessible 24/7. Parking management is fully digital. The site has open access and is designed to ease pressure on the nearby residential area.

“With this investment, we are providing urgently needed parking capacity for road transport and giving truck drivers a safe, central and well-equipped parking facility outside the residential area,” said Lars Nennhaus, President of Technology & Operations at duisport.

“Through the smart allocation of parking spaces, we achieve one-third more capacity in the same area and increase efficiency,” added Ann-Sophie Karas, Project Leader for digital parking management.
